Greyland Games at Scream Jam 2024: Bringing a Halloween Game to Life

Halloween is a time for spooky surprises, and this year, Greyland Games joined the festivities by participating in SCREAM ZONE’s Scream Jam 2024 on itch.io! This annual event gave us the perfect platform to showcase our game strategy, gather some real feedback on our educational approach, and bring our Halloween game concept to life. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how our team pulled it all together for this exciting challenge.

The Spark of an Idea

It all started when Aki Kurvinen, our Game Developer, proposed entering Scream Jam. With a flair for game strategy and a keen interest in testing our teaching methods with real players, Aki saw the event as a fantastic opportunity for Greyland Games to connect with a wider audience. Our CEO, Katerina Crawford, was thrilled at the idea and quickly asked our Graphic Designer and Game Artist, Bianca Jalonen, to get the visuals rolling.

After reviewing the beta concept, Bianca was tasked with creating all the game art visuals for the final version. It was no small feat—she had just three days to design and produce a complete set of assets for Aki to integrate into the game. Despite the tight timeline, Bianca delivered her set of visuals that brought our spooky concept to life. After that, Aki weaved his programming magic, and made the game into a smooth, fun, interactive experience.

Bringing Voices from Around the World

With the art and programming finalized, we turned our attention to voice-overs. Katerina, always thinking of creative ways to involve our diverse team, coordinated recordings in multiple languages, bringing a unique cultural flair to the game. Each team member took on a different language: Aki recorded the Finnish voice-over, Bianca handled the English, Katerina herself voiced the Czech, and our intern, Nicole “Nicky” Tarimo, brought in the Swahili. The result was a multilingual experience that added a distinct personality to each character, immersing players in the game’s world like never before.

Feedback and the Road Ahead

Once our submission went live, the feedback began streaming in. Scream Jam players left comments, shared their thoughts, and provided insights that are truly invaluable for our development process. Not only did this give us a sense of how our game strategy resonated with players, but it also gave us new ideas for enhancing our approach to educational game design.

Receiving so many positive comments has only motivated us further. With wind in our sails, we’re already looking ahead to our next project! The Greyland Games team is buzzing with excitement, and we’re eager to create an even more engaging experience for our community. So, stay tuned—there’s a lot more on the horizon as we continue to expand, explore, and experiment with new ideas.

Thank you to everyone who played, commented, and joined us in the Halloween spirit at Scream Jam 2024!
